oof!!! turtledove, i completely hear what you are saying. unfortunately, as a cis woman i don’t have any framework for understanding the specific anxieties and problems you’re talking about here, so i am going to respond as best i can publicly but maybe some of my followers with more relevant experience can be more helpful to you!
anyway, disclaimers aside: i think you’re actually asking two questions here, one about how you’re going to FEEL and one about how you’re going to LOOK.
in terms of how you’ll look, i feel very much like it is Not My Lane to talk about body-specific stuff wrt what you’re asking about, but i will say that running in the winter all bundled up, like …. unless you have ENORMOUS bazoombas, you’re not going to be able to see them. i myself have reasonably sized boobs and when i’m in all my coldgear i just look like a giant pillowcase with legs. i am very, uh, shapely?? insofar as i have like a 1950s hourglass shape, and when i run outside i could be a 27 year old woman or an 8 year old boy and honestly except for the height it would be a very genuine toss-up.
with regard to how you’re going to FEEL being a visible human being (which i will agree with you is truly the worst curse of living) i try to keep the following in mind:
no one is looking at you. honestly, they aren’t. no one is ever looking at or noticing you as much as it feels like they are; they’ve got their own lives, and they’re too busy worrying that everyone is noticing them.
i look STUPID when i run. i know this. i am pigeon toed and my center of gravity is all janked up and my posture is just okay. i think for me a big part of it is just acknowledging these things and trying to cultivate an attitude of like, ¯_(ツ)_/¯. yeah, i look stupid, whatever. i’ve looked much more stupid doing much less stupid things. you should see me trying to eat popcorn.
i try to concentrate on how my body feels. running makes me feel good (and sometimes very very bad!!! but even that is a feeling). the more i concentrate on how my body feels as i run, the less mental space i have to worry about how my body looks.
look, i honestly just have a really active fantasy life? if you see me running there is a 90% chance i’m listening to zombies run or just otherwise dreaming up a drawn-out fantasy where i’m living in the old west and chasing a train because my no-good conman of an ex stole my dowry, or whatever. honestly, it makes runs EXTREMELY exciting, 10/10.
i hope some of that was helpful!! if anyone with better advice wants to chime in, replies are open. ❤
You swerve to avoid a squirrel. Unknown to you, the squirrel pledges a life debt to you. In your darkest hour, the squirrel arrives.
I showed this to my 5 year old nephew and said ‘what do you think this brave squirrel’s name is?’ and he replied ‘Sir Nuts-a-lot’ and my mom has been laughing for about 5 solid minutes
It is a completely different show with completely different characters (and some of my favorites left out completely) but we knew that already and 2018 She-Ra is so SO good at storytelling, character and emotion.
Despite being mostly unrelated to one another, it has a lot of aspects I originally wanted from Steven Universe, or thought Steven Universe was building towards before it kind of dropped them. A really solid balance of intense drama and wholesome fun.
SPOILER FREE OPINIONS ON THE 2018 VILLAINS:
HORDAK: we don’t see him a whole lot. They basically just made him much more serious and spooky and held off on him as much as they could so he’d actually feel important. No strong opinion on this, it works for what this series is going for.
IMP: holy shit they made him deliberately and successfully UNSETTLING.
CATRA: completely forgettable in the original series, now She-ra’s former best friend and the most complex character in the show. Story arc gets heartbreaking with some strikingly realistic depictions of growing up psychologically abused.
SCORPIA: original Scorpia was a mean, simple-minded brute villain and I loved her. She had a Boston accent for no reason. New Scorpia is basically a scorpion girl Kronk; huge and strong and not very smart and part of the villain team but completely sweet and nice. I also love her. She is one of the best “villains” in both series but in the new series she’s also a sympathetic one with more importance and kind of makes the show as soon as she comes in.
ENTRAPTA: this one WAS a villain in the 80′s show, her only known traits being her tentacle hair and that she’s good with machines. Both of those apply to 2018 Entrapta, but now she’s one of the princesses instead of one of the villains. She’s just dangerous because she’s kind of “unaffiliated” to anything other than her love of science and she is absolutely the most entertaining character in the new show.
SHADOW WEAVER: I still like her simpler old design and nasty, raspy voice the best, but the new one is extremely cool in only slightly different ways. She’s still the most evil and menacing character in the Horde, and this time there’s much more emphasis placed on the fact that she raised our heroine like a foster mom, something only fleetingly mentioned in the 80′s cartoon and never touched on again.
Overall, you would think some fans would be more receptive to such a drastic “reimagining” when Ninja Turtles has done it fifteen million times by now. I love both shows for completely different reasons. I’d probably also love a “more faithful” remake but I wouldn’t love it “more” than this remake. It’s doing its own thing.
And if you see someone complain that the new show has a “liberal agenda” then you know they weren’t really a fan of the original shows at all, since both He-Man and She-Ra were loaded with what Filmation’s writers intended (by 80′s cartoon standards) to be progressive messages about peace, diversity and tolerance. The only big difference is that the old show devoted whole episodes to these messages, then had characters talk to the audience about them before the end credits, so….the new show is only subtler about it.
Piedmont will have absolutely no clue how to handle Post-Weirdmaggedon Dipper and Mabel.
The neighborhood kids play hide and seek and they’re hanging out on some random roof. You can’t beat them if you can’t reach them, suckas.
They’re outside every hour of the day. Literally. If you happen to be outside at two in the morning you might find them mid-magic hunt. Why not? Ford always said to take advantage of your insomnia for science.
Once some teenagers performing some weird Halloween hazing the Pines kids absolutely wrecked them. They literally have no chill.
For that matter, if you look Mabel in the eye, rumors say, you immediately have to play a game of cards with her. Never take pocket change anywhere near their street.
The pig goes with them. That’s final.
They say Dipper Pines has a six pack. They say he’s shredded. They saw he’s got a scar across the belly from fighting off a pack of wolves with his fists.
All the doors in the world are open if you know how to pick locks… Not that they’re saying they can. That’s implementing themselves in multiple unsolved crimes, and that would be stupid.
Feel free to add your own!
Mabel starts leaving handmade jewelry around their school, their neighborhood, the local grocery store. People who know her are afraid to touch them but strangers pick up these little wire and yarn doodads and find themselves having some very good luck.
There’s a rumor that that kid who always falls asleep in class couldn’t sleep at night because a ghost was haunting him. One night they find out that Dipper got in trouble for breaking into his house in the dead of night. That kid stops falling asleep in class.
On all their homework and tests, they leave behind red ink eyes crossed out with an X. One of Mabel’s classmates asked her why and she looked up front, at their Trigonometry teacher and said, just in case.
Dipper listens to a death metal band called Robbie V and the Tombstones. No one can find their songs anywhere, but if you ask he’s happy to lend you his CDs.
Mabel remembers everything, about everyone. She’s the only one who remembers the birthdays of the kids with no friends and she shares happy memories when her peers are upset about a grade or family stuff. She writes down little details in a pink glittery notebook, so that no one will ever forget.
Dipper and a group of his classmates went on a field trip in the woods. When Dipper disappeared for several hours, the teachers panicked, but he appeared at their bus a few hours later, having collected all the data he needed for his bio lab and toting a jar filled with multicolored moths. He’s banged up, but he doesn’t seem to notice. When someone asks where he got them, he says “Mothman” and doesn’t answer any more questions.
Mabel makes a tidy profit off of Mabel Juice during final exam season. Half their graduating class will swear by it all through high school even if it does taste terrible. (The arrest rate for stimulant drug use drops close to zero.)
