Does anyone on this site understand the concept of comorbidity
Comorbidity is when 2 or more diagnoses are present in the same person. For example, someone having both depression and an anxiety disorder. I think a lot of people in general don’t really understand this. Most assume that anyone with more than 2 disorders has to be faking at least one of them – the statistical possibility of someone having both schizophrenia and ocd has to be pretty low, right???? Wrong – studies have shown that almost a whopping 50% of people with schizophrenia also have obsessive compulsive symptoms.
The brain is an impossibly complex and delicate organ, and there are millions of genes, neurons, and proteins that all have their respective jobs. And when something goes a little wrong upstairs, it has a huge impact on the entire system. That’s why it’s much more likely for someone to have MULTIPLE diagnoses, instead of just one – unless the disorder is incredibly localized, it’s going to affect a lot of your behaviors.
We’re not really sure what’s up with my brain without unrealistic amounts of testing, but we can still make diagnoses. I have ocd, adhd, psychotic depression, ptsd (although that was a result of trauma) and multiple sleep disorders. I have other symptoms we can’t really classify, because not everything can be neatly categorized. And sometimes I get irritated with all the things “wrong” with me, but my story is pretty par for the course. If you have one disorder, you’re much more likely to have more disorders too, whether they’re diagnosed or not.
The point is, comorbidity is common, and you should never assume someone is making up diagnoses for attention.
Also this goes for physical illnesses and conditions as well!
